Introducing VLC Media Player The VideoLAN project targets multimedia streaming of MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and DivX files, DVDs, digital satellite channels, digital terrestrial TV channels and live video over a high-speed IPv4 or IPv6 network in unicast or multicast under many operating systems
VideoLAN also offers a cross-platform media player, VLC, which can be used to play the network stream or display the video played locally on the computer under all GNU/Linux flavors, all BSD flavors, Windows, Mac OS Solaris, QNX, familiar Linux
VideoLAN is free software and is released under the GNU General Public License
It started as a student project at the École Centrale Française in Paris, but is now a global project with developers from 20 countries
